Scientific Research Committee

Minutes April 28, 2013

Current situation:

  • In the new governance plan, research is not mentioned.
  • In the academic goals, research is not mentioned.
  • There is no recognition by the University for scholarly publications.
  • Students say on surveys that teachers in the discipline are not up to date in their discipline

Suggestion: Create a Climate of Research

  1. When faculty publish a paper, they present it at the beginning of each Faculty Senate (5 min presentation and 10 min discussion).
  2. Expect new PhDs who join faculty to publish their dissertation—Evan, Rod, Viji in Maharishi Vedic Science in their first year on faculty. Mentors in each department will work with the new PhDs
  3. Money from the Endowment should be earmarked for research: going to conferences, small funds to conduct research, etc.

    1. If funded to attend a conference, the faculty is expected to submit a paper for publication. Once they do that, then they can apply for more funds to attend a future conference.
  4. Create a Scientific Research Web Presence:

    1. Faculty post their papers.
    2. Place for internal chat about research issues
  5. Grant’s Office work with departments to support grant writing.
  6. Reward faculty who have already published. Give them time the next year.

    1. Point SystemL (1) = conrference, blog; (3) peer review publication; (9) book
      1. 2010-2011: 14 faculty published papers (9.8 points average)
      2. 2011-2012: 27 faculty published papers (9.1 points average)

Sucesses in 2013

  • Suggestion 1. we have presented research before every faculty senate meeting.
  • Suggestion 2. We have offered to faculty who have not publisehd their dissertatoin to work on transforming their dissertatoin into a paper during the Forest. Debra Levitsky took this course and is well on the way to publish.
  • Suggestion 3. There has been no concrete action on this point
  • Suggestion 4. This has not been done. However, we have organized a successful Faculty Research Seminar in which faculty presented on their research (15 min) and others commented (15 min)
  • Suggestion 5. This is being done
  • Suggestion 6. We have used a points system for two years and will continue. There is a proposal that 5 faculty can petition to have a decrease in teaching load to publish or do research
