Introduction to Consciousness-Based Education

“If the age is to change to one of invincibility, a fundamental value has to be supplied to the field of education. The missing fundamental is knowledge of pure consciousness and how to experience it.”–Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Enlightenment to Every Individual, Invincibility to Every Nation, pp. 148-9.

Consciousness-based Education is a system of education designed to develop the full value of consciousness of each faculty member and each student, so that both teacher and student bring full receptivity, alertness, and wakefulness to the teaching and learning interaction. When these qualities are present, then learning is more meaningful, more deeply understood, and more fully remembered.

Key Components of Consciousness-based Education
Consciousness-based Education has five key components:

  1. Practice of the Maharishi Technologies of Consciousness, the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs. These technologies are the core of Consciousness-based Education. They provide direct experience of the field of pure consciousness, self-knowledge, and unfold its benefits in daily life.
  2. Courses in the Maharishi Science of Consciousness, including the Science and Technology of Consciousness, the Science of Creative Intelligence, and courses in Maharishi Vedic Science. These courses provide intellectual understanding of the field of consciousness and its role in illuminating and unifying different disciplines and different areas of students lives.
  3. Study of traditional disciplines in light of the knowledge and experience of consciousness. This educational approach provides detailed understanding of the world and makes knowledge relevant and fully connected to students’ own experience and growth.
  4. Specific curriculum planning and teaching practices. These practices strengthen students’ holistic development so that they are able to think and act using more and more of their full creative potential.
  5. A healthy, stress-free routine and nourishing environment. The recommended daily routine and nourishing environment help students gain and maintain a restfully alert stress-free mind and body the optimal psychophysiological state for unfolding more of their inner potential.
