Total Knowledge, Dharma

The Perennial Search for Knowledge & Total Knowledge

Wholeness:

By enlivening the unbounded field of pure consciousness within, one naturally transcends the duality of subjective and objective knowledge, and gains access to the source of both. This is Total Knowledge.

Study Questions:

  • Describe the two paradigms that have guided man’s search for knowledge throughout history.
  • How can these opposite approaches be integrated?
  • What makes science an objective discipline? How can science be applied to inner subjectivity?

Dharma, Evolution, and Personal Goals

Wholeness

“Expansion of happiness is the purpose of life, and evolution is the process through which it is fulfilled.”
—Maharishi, The Science of Being and Art of Living, p. 48
“Dharma is that invincible power of nature which upholds existence. It maintains evolution and forms the very basis of cosmic life.”
—Maharishi, A New Commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita

Study Questions

  • According to STC, what is the essential nature of human existence and what is the purpose of life?
  • How does STC describe the concept of “dharma”? Describe the different levels of dharma.
  • Why is the practice of TM an integral part of class at MIU?
  • Now is the time to think big and see what this year holds for you.

Teaching Resources (specifics to be added)

  • Excerpt from Maharishi, A New Commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita
  • Excerpt from Your Brain is a River, not a Rock by Fred Travis
  • Activity: Students draw a concept map of their life story that led them to MIU and their personal goals for their first year, then share in class
  • Faculty can show a sample concept map to introduce that “concept” in preparation for the final project, which is also a concept map
  • Sample concept maps — Point out that these elaborate sample maps are examples of the final project, but this assignment asks for something much simpler to give them a first experience of creating a concept map:
