ASC Policies for Directed Studies

- Directed studies are not independent studies.
- Directed study teachers are required to meet with the student AT LEAST THREE TIMES PER WEEK FOR AN HOUR EACH TIME to review progress and provide feedback.
- Every academic department should designate a faculty member to oversee all directed study and internship requests and question any that do not meet ASC policies.
- Faculty teaching a standard (not evening-weekend) course cannot teach a directed-study course at the same time.
- Faculty who are asked to teach a course NOT in their regular discipline must have competency to teach the course and must secure prior approval from the head of the department that normally teaches the course. Non-waivable courses, such as Physics or Comp, may be taught only by faculty from that particular department or background. (Below is a list of non-waivable general education courses.)
- A course that is not a graduation requirement cannot be requested for directed study.
- Students should have a strong academic reason for taking up a faculty member’s valuable time to teach a directed study. (An example of a compelling reason would be if the student hopes to graduate at the end of the semester but lacks an important course that is not readily available.)
- Students cannot take a directed study if the desired course is available at another time in the year, unless it is their final year at MUM and two required courses occur at the same time.
- Students who skip a required course to take a non-required course are ineligible to take the required course as a directed study.
- Students on Academic Warning status are ineligible for directed studies or internships. Academic Warning status occurs when a) they have 1 or more NCs in the previous semester; b) their grade point average is below 2.0; c) they haven’t completed 2/3 of instructional credits attempted; or d) they are over 192 credits. - Students may take up to a total of 16 units of directed studies and internships but not more than 8 units of directed studies.
General Education Courses that are non-waivable;
- STC108 Science and Technology of Consciousness
- MVS202 Higher States of Consciousness (unless the student is a TM teacher)
- MATH153 or higher
- PH101 Physiology is Consciousness
- PHYS110 Foundations of Physics and Cosmology
- WTG191 Composition 1
- WTG192 Composition 2
